A Severed Head by Iris Murdoch5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Martin is shocked when his wife announces that she wants a divorce because she is deeply in love with Palmer. Iris Murdoch has made a tightly-structured novel, using Martin as the first-person narrator. ![]() ![]() There are only a few characters – Martin, who is complacently happy with his mistress Georgie and his wife Antonia, Palmer who is Antonia’s analyst, Palmer’s half-sister, Honor, and Martin’s brother and sister Alexander and Rosemary. I felt I was looking into a different world and time. As I was reading it I thought it would make a good farce and then I discovered that Iris Murdoch had adapted her book for the stage. Recently I’ve read A Severed Head, first published in 1961 and have been wondering what to write about it without giving away too much of the plot. ![]() I’ve enjoyed several of her novels and biographies of her by John Bayley, Peter Conradi (an official biography)and A N Wilson (this last one was rather controversial). This last February was the tenth anniversary of Iris Murdoch’s death. ![]()

Michener space5/24/2023 ![]() Space should be required reading in high school. ![]() ![]() As I was re-reading it on an airplane, remembering what I was feeling 37 years ago when man first walked on the moon, I sadly realized that the 20-something kid sitting next to me didn’t have any of those memories. Michener accurately captured the spirit of the time. Since I lived through that period of time, and was personally involved in the space program to a small degree in my work, and had far too much involvement with the politics of science in the later part of that period of time, it brought back many memories to me. He begins with the capture of German rocket scientists in the closing days of World War II, and takes us right up to 1982. Except for a few real people, including Eisenhower, Lyndon Johnson, and Werner von Braun, the characters are Michener’s creations, allowing him to examine the United States space program from various points of view. In 1982, James Michener published an excellent novel about the lives of some fictional scientists, astronauts, and politicians. Michener’s Space Evolution in Fiction - August 2006Īfter nearly a quarter of a century, it is a good time to re-examine James Michener’s observations about the interactions between science, religion, and politics. ![]()
